The Central Bank of Nigeria has the authority to accredit and re-accredit cheque printers for personal and business use in Nigeria’s banking system. This is in furtherance of its mandate to ensure an efficient Payment and Settlement System in the country.
Before 2013, only foreign companies were accredited to print cheques for Nigerian banks. In 2013, the Central Bank of Nigeria, in collaboration with the MICR Technical Implementation Committee conducted accreditation and re-accreditation exercise in line with Nigeria’s Cheques Printers Accreditation Scheme (NICPAS) qualification criteria in which two domestic companies were accredited and none of the foreign printers were either accredited or re-accredited, thereby ending the era of foreign companies printing cheques for Nigerian banks.
The pioneer local accredited cheque printers in Nigeria are Superflux International Ltd, and Tripple Gee and Company Limited.
The number of local cheque printers for Nigerian market was increased to four in May 2023.
The apex bank in August 2023 added new names to the number of accredited cheque printers and personalisers in Nigeria. The CBN announced this in a circular with reference number: BKS/SCO/CON/001/002.
According to the circular, 7 banks have been approved as cheque personalisers in Nigeria, while 2 more companies received accreditation as cheque printers, raising the total number of accredited cheque printers in Nigeria to six.
The circular which was signed by Director of Banking Services Department, Sam Okejere reads: “In furtherance of its mandate to ensure an efficient Payment and Settlement System, the Central Bank of Nigeria, in collaboration with the MICR Technical Implementation Committee, conducted the re-accreditation of Cheques Printers and Cheque Personalisers in line with the NICPAS qualification criteria."
