How to Get International Driver's Permit License in Lagos, Nigeria


The Director of Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Akin-George Fashola, on Thursday December 1, announced that those living in Lagos are now eligible for International Driver’s Permit license beginning in December 2022.

According to him, the issuance of International Certificates for vehicles and International Driver’s Permits are in line with international requirements.

What You Should Know about International Driver’s Permit

It’s valid from 1 to 3 years periods

It permits you to drive legally abroad.

It’s translated in 12 different languages

Accepted in over 150 countries

The main function of an IDP is to help translate your national driver’s license into 12 of the widely used languages worldwide. You can use this document if you only intend to drive in a country as a foreign driver for three months or less. If you are driving in the country for more than three months, you would be required to:

  • Attend a driving school
  • Pass driving test to get your Nigerian license.

International Requirements

You need to first have a valid National Driver’s License which is a main identification for you to drive in Nigeria. 

This is also another required document to rent a motor vehicle at car rental company, so authorities can understand the information that is written on your driver’s license.

Where you already have a car you intend to drive in Nigeria, you would be required to provide on the class or description of the vehicle in line with section 326 (U) of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL) 2018
