List of Cargo Bonded Terminals in Lagos


Cargo shipments are berthed in two Nigerian wharfs in Lagos: Apapa Wharf and Tincan-Island Wharf. The two seaports are under the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority. The NPA gives license to private companies to operate the terminals in these ports. Over 80% of sea cargo shipments into Nigeria and 90% non-oil exports pass through the two sea ports in Lagos. To decongest the Lagos seaports and fast track consignments clearing process, Nigerian Customs gives license to private companies to operate bonded terminals in Lagos. The history of bonded terminals in Nigeria can be traced to 1980 and 1982 when the Federal Government established inland container depots in Kano and Kaduna respectively.

How Bonded Cargo Terminals Receive Cargos 

When container cargos arrive to the seaports, seaport terminal operate which the shipping company uses can move some containers to their affiliate bonded terminals. This is done in agreement with the NC, the shipping company, seaport terminal operator and its affiliate bonded terminals operator. The shipping companies inform their clients (importers) where they will locate their consignments for clearing. An importer whose goods are coming into Nigeria usually choose Tin-Can Island Wharf or Apapa Wharf as destination. In the even, the containers are to be moved to bonded terminal, the shipping company inform the importer that His goods will be moved or has been moved to a particular bonded terminals.

An imported can also apply to the NC for his consignment to be moved to a particular bonded terminal of his choice. This is subject to the approval by the Customs.
