Amazon Opens Office in Nigeria


A tech giant, Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), has opened its first office in Lagos, Nigeria.

AWS sub-Saharan Africa regional manger, Amrote Abdella, who announced this on Tuesday , said the office was to reinforce its commitment to Africa.

“We are excited to open our first AWS office in Nigeria,” she said. “Lagos offers a highly skilled and creative talent pool, and the area is home to many fast-growing startups and notable Nigerian enterprises leading the way in digital innovation.”

Amazon Web Services is a subsidiary of Amazon, that offers website hosting, backup, digital marketing, analytics, application integration, blockchain, networking, and other related services to clients worldwide.

Ms explained that the firm is opening the Nigerian office to be able to provide support to its growing African customers

“We look forward to fostering the country’s pioneering spirit and helping our customers accelerate their digital transformation as they deliver innovative new products and services to the Nigerian community,” added Ms Abdella.

She also said that AWS Activate provides supports for  startups to kickstart their businesses online, and also provides them credits up to $100,000,  training, support, and connect them with incubators, accelerators, and venture capital firms.

AWS Academy, she said helps university students and educators develop knowledge and skills on tech on AWS Cloud computing to accelerate cloud-related learning.

Ms Abdella  said AWS Academy already has some member institutions in Nigeria, which includes University of Jos, University of Benin, and Igbinedion University. 

Recall that parent company, Amazon in June announced its plan to launch its e-commerce store in Nigeria by April, 2023, and it started recruitment of young talents for it Nigeria office.
