Governor Nyesom Wike has filed a lawsuit challenging the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as 2023 presidential election flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP

Wike alongside another PDP member Michael Ekamon, filed the suit in July before the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Other defendants in the lawsuit include the Peoples Democratic Party, Governor Aminu Tambuwal and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to report by Peoples Gazette, the defendants were served on July 1, and PDP responded to the originating summons on August 5 in Abuja.

The lawsuit may not be unconnected to the process of  PDP’s primary that produced Atiku Abubakar as it’s presidential candidate for 2023 presidential election.

The party's constitution recognises power rotation between North and South. But the party discarded its zoning arrangement and threw the contest open to all party men and women.

This is comes as the party’s reconciliation panel begins sitting to reconcile all the aggrieved members and resolve a cold war between the party’s  presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike over the outcome of the presidential primary and the selection of a running mate by Abubakar. The crisis aggravated last week when  Wike publicly accused Atiku Abubakar of lying against him on national television and allegedly recruiting “attack dogs” in the party to attack him.

Wike’s  anger intensified after Atiku Abubakar chose Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State as his running mate instead of Wike.  Atiku had said his choice of running mate was based on competence and loyalty

Wike came second during the primary, scoring 237 votes behind Abubakar, who polled 371 votes from the total 767 votes cast at the convention ground in Abuja. Wike attributed his loss  to Aminu Tambuwal’s decision to step down for Mr Abubakar at the die minute, describing the process as unfair, saying he could have disrupted the entire process but decided to keep his calm in the interest of peace.
