United Kingdom is one of choice destinations for international students to get quality, foreign education. But then, before being admitted into any British school, you have to show proof of your English language proficiency. UK and some other countries conduct IELTS and TOEFL exams for intending students from non-native English speaking countries to test their English language proficiency.
IELTS which stands for International English Language Testing System, is an international standardized test of candidate’s proficiency in English language. IELTS is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. Established in 1989, IELTS tests English proficiency of candidates mainly from non-native English speaking countries especially Africa, Asia, Europe.
There are however, some universities in the UK that waive the test of English language proficiency, IELTS for international students. These universities adopt different methods to determine if a student meets IELTS exemption. Some of the criteria include proof that:
i. The applicant is either a native English speaker; or student coming from non English countries who has received formal degree education of three or more consecutive years where teaching is done in English language.
Ii. Students have completed either O-level or A-level examinations where the teaching and examinations were done in English language.
