Canada Waives IELTS, TOEFL for Nigerian Students Seeking for Admission

The Athabasca University, Canada, has excluded prospective Nigerian students from foreign applicants that must write and pass English proficiency before admission.

The waiver for Nigeria followed a protest letter written to the university by a Canada-based Nigerian don, Dr Olumuyiwa Igblalajobi.

Dr Igblalajobi, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Canada, last month, achieved the same feat for Nigerians from University of Alberta, Canada.

Igbalajob in the letter to the university argued that Nigeria is an English-speaking country and therefore anyone from there should not require to write IELTS, TOFEL and others.

He explained that Nigeria teaches its children in English from primary to tertiary level, which is a proof that the country is an English-speaking country.

He further  argued that since English is the official language of business in Nigeria, no need for further English tests.

According to him “It’s bad to request IELTS from African countries colonized by the British.”

He vowed to continue to identify and write to academic institutions that request English test from Nigerians.

“I have written about 12 universities till date. I will continue to identify universities with stale lists and those who wouldn’t recognize Nigeria as an English speaking country.”

Granting his demand, Athabasca University, Canada has now deleted Nigeria from its list of countries to write International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and other English tests before enrollment.

In response to the letter, the school has recognised Nigeria as an English-speaking country.

This waiver will be a relief for Nigerians who see the tests as mountains to surmount before gaining admission to Canadian universities of their choice.

Dr. Olumuyiwa Igblalajobi's landmark achievement has been praised by social media users and other Nigerians.
