The World Bank Lead Economist in the Middle East and North Africa region’s Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Group, Tara Vishwanath, has described President, Muhammadu Buhari’s target of lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years as ambitious.

Tara Vishwanath stated while responding to a question by journalist during a virtual World Bank media discussion on COVID-19 and jobs in Nigeria on Thursday.

She was very unequivocal in stating that the goal was a very ambitious one, which could only be attainable, if certain enabling policies were in place to provide opportunities in the labour market and boost investors’ confidence.

“My short answer is that it is an ambitious goal. It is an ambitious goal but over a decade, many things can happen,” she said

She added that while it was good to be ambitious, the policy environment and the opportunities in the labour market were crucial.
