774,000 Jobs: Beneficiaries To Start Work On 5th January, 2021

The beneficiaries of the 774,000 Special Public Works scheme are to start work by 5th January, 2021.

Festus Keyamo, Minister of Labour and Employment stated this in Abuja on Sunday, 13th Dec., 2020. According to him,  the programme will run from January to March. 

“We have taken a firm decision on January 5, 2020, but I am going to make an official announcement after FEC meeting on Wednesday. We had a few hiccups in December but we have taken a decision to begin January 5 which is a Tuesday.

“The programme will run from January to March 2021 which is pure dry season. So we are ready, all the obstacles have been removed.” the Minister said

The program would have commenced before now but it experienced much setbacks due to impasse between the executive and the National Assembly on who is to supervise the program. The federal lawmakers had demanded to supervise the program. It was also alleged that the law makers and some other top government officials were given some job slots I  their constituencies where the lawmakers were demanding for more slots. 

The special public works scheme is one of the job creation programmes by Prsiedent Mohammadu Buhari to engage 774,000 young unemployed Nigerians in public works like sweeping of streets and markets, cleaning of drainages and gutters etc in their localities for a period of 3 months with N20,000 monthly stipends. 

According to the Minister, the successful applicants will be paid through their bank accounts using BVN to avoid double payment and/ or fraud. Only six approved banks will be used to pay the beneficiaries.

The Minister had on 29th September engaged six banks, namely Zenith, UBA, Access, Fidelity, FCMB  and Heritage to open accounts for 774,000 participants of the Special Public Works Programme in their branches in the 774 LGAs across the country.
